Mamoru Oshii is an anime director associated with philosophical and structurally austere work. He is best known internationally for Ghost in the Shell (1995), but his canonical output for Japanese audiences also includes the Patlabor films, Angel's Egg (1985), and the Urusei Yatsura features Only You and Beautiful Dreamer.
Career
Oshii joined Tatsunoko in 1977 and moved to Studio Pierrot in 1980, where he directed both Urusei Yatsura features. Beautiful Dreamer (1984) is one of the earliest examples of an anime feature departing markedly from its source material's tone and is often cited as the moment Oshii's directorial style separates from Rumiko Takahashi's. Angel's Egg (1985), a near-silent feature, established his quieter register.
His Production I.G work with screenwriter Kazunori ItΕ includes Patlabor 2 (1993) and the Ghost in the Shell features (1995, 2004). Subsequent live-action work β Avalon (2001), Assault Girls (2009) β sits outside the mainstream anime industry.
Style
- Long held shots, often of empty cityscapes or water.
- Extended philosophical dialogue, frequently while characters are static.
- Recurring imagery β basset hounds, fish, urban surveillance β across multiple films.
- Comfort with sparse plot in favour of mood and concept.
