Naoko Takeuchi is the author of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (1991–1997), the shōjo manga and anime franchise that combined the magical-girl tradition with super-sentai team conventions and became, in commercial and cultural terms, one of the defining works of 1990s Japanese popular media.
Career
Takeuchi debuted in 1986 and serialised Codename: Sailor V (1991) in RunRun before its expanded form Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon began in Nakayoshi the same year. The Toei anime adaptation, broadcast from 1992, ran for five seasons and was syndicated to broadcasters in dozens of countries during the mid-1990s.
Influence
Sailor Moon's combination of magical-girl conventions with team-action structure is the direct ancestor of Toei's long-running Pretty Cure franchise (2004–present) and of most subsequent magical-girl works. The series is among the most-studied 1990s anime in the academic literature, particularly in work on gender presentation in animation.
