Satoshi Kon was an anime film director whose four features — Perfect Blue (1997), Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), and Paprika (2006) — and television series Paranoia Agent (2004) are now treated as a small, complete body of work whose stylistic concerns prefigured a generation of Western live-action film, most visibly Darren Aronofsky's. He died of cancer in 2010 at age 46.
Career
Kon entered the industry through manga, contributing to Young Magazine in the late 1980s, and moved to anime through work as a layout artist and writer for Mamoru Oshii's Patlabor 2 and Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories. His four features were produced at Madhouse with producer Masao Maruyama.
Style
- Match cuts on graphic similarity, sometimes within a single shot, to elide spatial and temporal transitions.
- Fictional, oneiric, and remembered material treated as continuous with diegetic reality, without conventional dream-sequence markers.
- Adult protagonists — a deliberate departure from anime's youth-skewed cast conventions.
- Extensive use of split-second cuts and frame-by-frame composition, more cinematic than typical anime layouts.
Influence
Darren Aronofsky has acknowledged the influence of Perfect Blue on Requiem for a Dream (2000) and Black Swan (2010). Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010) was widely compared to Paprika (2006), though Nolan has not commented on the connection. Kon's death left an unfinished feature, Dreaming Machine, which has not been completed.
