Yoshitoshi ABe

Yoshitoshi ABe is an illustrator and character designer associated with a small cluster of late-1990s and early-2000s works β€” Serial Experiments Lain (1998), NieA_7 (2000), Haibane Renmei (2002), Texhnolyze (2003) β€” that established a recognisable visual idiom of muted palettes, unsettled adolescence, and quiet science-fictional disquiet.

Career

ABe trained at the Tokyo University of the Arts and worked initially as a doujin illustrator. His role on Serial Experiments Lain as character designer made his approach β€” drained colour, soft-edged adolescent figures, attention to clothing texture β€” visible to a mainstream anime audience. He has worked in close collaboration with writer Chiaki J. Konaka and director RyΕ«tarō Nakamura.
