CoMix Wave Films, founded in 1998, is the production company for nearly all of Makoto Shinkai's features from 5 Centimeters per Second (2007) onward. The studio's identity is largely synonymous with Shinkai's productions; it is unusual for an anime studio of its size to be so closely tied to a single director.
Production model
CoMix Wave operates on a smaller scale than the major studios but maintains substantial in-house resources for background painting, the technique most central to Shinkai's stylistic signature. Shinkai's three blockbuster features (2016, 2019, 2022) have established the studio as commercially significant despite a small headcount relative to studios like Toei or A-1 Pictures.
