Polygon Pictures, founded in 1983, is among Japan's oldest 3D-CG animation studios. Most of its output is full-CG rather than hybrid: Ajin: Demi-Human (2016), Knights of Sidonia (2014), Levius (2019). The studio's identity sits separately from the broader 2D-anime tradition.
Position in the industry
Polygon Pictures is unusual in Japanese animation in operating principally in full-3D CG. Its productions have a recognisable visual register: stylised cel-shading, lower frame counts than 2D peers, and visible reliance on motion-capture for character movement. The studio's work is sometimes received with reservation by audiences accustomed to 2D-cel aesthetics, but its productions support technical ambitions — large casts, frequent vehicles, complex environments — that 2D anime cannot match within typical TV budgets.
