Pixiv (founded 2007, headquartered in Tokyo) is the largest illustration-hosting platform aimed at Japanese-speaking artists and the principal online infrastructure of Japanese amateur and semi-professional illustration since the late 2000s. Its associated services — pixiv FANBOX (subscription patronage), Booth (digital and physical sales), pixiv Sketch (live drawing) — collectively form an ecosystem that has substantially restructured how illustrators in Japan reach audiences and earn income.
The core platform
Pixiv functions as an illustration portfolio site: artists upload single images or sequential work, tag it, and accumulate followers, bookmarks, and rankings. The platform's tag system — which is heavily used by readers for browsing rather than search — is one of the more sophisticated taxonomies of fan-illustration content in any platform. Pixiv's user base is concentrated in Japan but extends substantially to Chinese-language and English-language users.
FANBOX and the patronage model
Pixiv FANBOX, launched in 2018, allows artists to operate paid-subscription pages. The service is closely analogous to Patreon and is the principal Japanese-language platform of its type. Many established Japanese illustrators run FANBOX accounts in parallel with commercial work, with subscription revenue used to fund original projects or short comics that would not be commercially viable through traditional publishers.
Booth
Booth is Pixiv's commerce platform, used for digital downloads (illustration books, fonts, 3D models for VRChat) and physical merchandise (printed doujinshi, art prints, character goods). Booth's role in the doujin economy is now comparable to Comiket's: many artists who continue to exhibit at Comiket also sell year-round on Booth.
